The course of History of Classical Archeology provides the tools to reconstruct the paths through which the human being has discovered his past, from the development of the collection of the antiquities to the genesis, the origin and the definition of the archaeological science. The class examines the approach to the material documentation of the past in different historical periods with particular attention to the birth of modern and contemporary archeology.
The objective is to provide the keys to understand the fundamentals of the history of classical archeology and the development of archeology as an autonomous science
Starting from "archaeology before archaeology" in the ancient and medieval world, the birth of modern archaeology and the dominant tendencies of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries up to the present day will be discussed from the point of view of classical archaeology, focusing on the birth of the latter, its particular evolution, the current dichotomies and uncertainties about what ‘classical archaeology’ means today.
On completion of the course the students will know in detail the historical evolution of classical archeology and will be able to frame its developments in the context of the theoretical and ideological lines that formed its thinking. They will also be in possession of the tools necessary to decipher and critically analyze the 'history of studies' of any context, site, material or topic of classical archeology that they will face in their educational and scientific path.
Frontal lectures/lessons, with use of Powerpoint (and other audiovisual media, where possible). Teaching materials can be found in Aulaweb. Educational visits to archaeological sites and museums.
