It begins in the first Christian centuries, with the Acts of the Martyrs, and continues to the present day. The Writing and Rewriting of a Hagiographical Narrative is functional to the religious and social needs of a historical period. Critical hagiography was born at the time of the Counter-Reformation by the Bollandist Society. The hagiographic texts are the source of inspiration for medieval artists in the representations of saints. AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to provide students with the ability to: - to outline the 'exemplary' function of the lives of the saints during the historical-social phases of Christianity; - identify the elements of tradition and innovation of the classical biography in the hagiographic text; - acquire basic tools to understand the Bible and the history of its interpretation; - recognize the biblical rewriting in the hagiographic text; - understand the iconographic models through the biblical symbolism and its tradition; - outline the different forms of rewriting of the hagiographic genre in European art and literature.
