OVERVIEW

The course aims to let the student know and understand the main issues of hygiene and public health, with particular reference to the concepts of prevention of infectious diseases and chronic degenerative diseases.

The course provides information on the methods and techniques used in prevention by analyzing the factors suitable for the protection of health.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities and individual study will allow the student to:
- Understand and apply methods and techniques used in the assessment and estimation of risk factors of both infectious and chronic-degenerative diseases
- Describe the epidemiology of diseases
- Evaluate preventive factors and health determinants

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Definition of health and factors characterising the transition from health to disease. Monofactorial, multifactorial, emerging and re-emerging diseases.
Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.
Epidemiology of non-infectious diseases
Epidemiology of infectious diseases:
Infectious agents. Infection and disease. Host and parasite relationships. Source of infection: Sources, reservoirs and spread of infections.  Infection occurrence and development: incubation, pathways, parasitic, parasitic and external factors. Immunity Rates of occurrence of infectious diseases in the community: chain of infection
Direct and indirect, non-specific and specific prophylaxis
Active and passive immunoprophylaxis.
Sterilisation and disinfection.
Relationship between environment, pollution and health

Epidemiological methodology: cross-sectional, longitudinal and experimental studies.
