OVERVIEW

Modern social geography brings together multiple orientations and research methods focused on the relationships between territorial and social dynamics.

Social geography asks how society interacts with space, how society perceives space and gives it symbolic values, and therefore relates to it by assuming certain behaviors or by making specific choices of territorial organization.

The course aims to provide the main theoretical references and foundations of social geography and to illustrate some case studies for a reading of social and economic phenomena in the area. In particular, the course focuses on the relationship between society and space, the latter seen as a social product

PREREQUISITES

Passing the exam of human geography of the 1st year.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching consists of lectures for a total of 36 hours. The use of multimedia supports is foreseen.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The evolution of social geography studies in Italy and in a more synthetic way in France, in Germany, in the Anglo-Saxon countries will be deepened. The different conceptions of space (absolute space, relative space, space as a social product) and the implications that derive from it that guide the research in the field will be presented. Finally, emblematic case studies will be presented.

The course will address geo-social issues with specific reference to the concepts of space, territory, place, network, social landscape. The issues and problems related to: borders, borders, migratory phenomena, gender will be studied in depth.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

For attending students the exam consists of a written test on the topics of the course. The exam is exclusively oral for non-attending students (ie for those who have not attended at least 75% of the lessons).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Details on how to prepare for the exam and the degree of depth of each topic will be given during the lessons. The written test for attending students and the oral interview for non-attending students have the task of verifying that the student has learned to use the main conceptual categories of social geography, as well as acquired the specific scientific vocabulary.
