OVERVIEW

Landslide disasters are caused by exposure to hazardous motions of soil and rock that threaten vulnerable human settlements in mountains, cities, coasts, and islands” (from the Sendai Partnership Resolution). As known, landslide disasters cannot be expected, but we can prepare for them better.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course deals with hazards posed by landslides and erosional processes resulting from natural phenomena and/or man-made actions. Firstly, the geotechnical bases and the principles of landslide classification, investigation and mapping, as well as the basic approaches to assess slope stability conditions will be presented. Later, the various techniques of slope monitoring and the methods available for the assessment of landslide susceptibility will be discussed. At last, the course will deal with aspects of landslide risk management, namely prevention and mitigation measures.

TEACHING METHODS

Lessons and exercises/field trips.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Geotechnical bases; introduction to landslide processes; landslide classification; landslide activity and rate of movement; landslide risk, landslide hazard, landslide susceptibility; landslide mapping; geologic site exploration; landslide monitoring; slope stability concepts; methods for landslide susceptibility assessment; slope stabilization measures.
