The course takes place through lectures. The initial part is devoted to the basic concepts on waves and to the fundamental concepts of electromagnetism. Starting from the analysis of the solutions of the electromagnetic wave equation, the most important phenomena of the wave optics are treated. Then the basic aspects of geometrical optics are explained. Finally, the properties of thermal radiation, LED radiation and of the laser are described.
The course aims at providing the basics of Optics in preparation for advanced chemical disciplines. The following subjects are dealt with: the properties of light radiation from thermal, laser and LED sources; the main phenomena of interference and diffraction; the definition of the various polarization states of a radiation.

The exam is oral. It consists of a test (duration between 30 and 40 minutes) in which questions are asked on at least two different topics of the course. The questions are aimed at ascertaining the level of understanding of the student, with particular attention to verifying the knowledge of the typical orders of magnitude for the relevant physical quantities.
By means of questions at the oral examination. The student must explain the fundamental steps to obtain the required results, and must be able to discuss the physical meaning of the results themselves.
