OVERVIEW

Electric systems are developing more and more in the territory with the need for increasingly sophisticated management and remote control in order to optimize production, monitoring and costs. Remote control is based on five fundamental parameters: sense, communication, computing, visualization, and control. In this perspective, the knowledge of telecommunication signals, systems and networks is of great importance for the comprehension and design of future systems.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides a unified view of the main topics of the telecommunications sector: representation and analysis of signals, transmission of signals on telecommunication channels, transmission of information through telecommunications networks. The theoretical principles underlying these issues will be briefly recalled along with the main techniques on which modern devices and telecommunications equipment are based.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course a student will be able to evaluate the properties of a signal (band occupation, power, periodicity,…), to design an analogical-digital transformation, a filter; he/she will understand the operation and block diagram of systems for the digital transmission of signals in the baseband and for the multiplexing of signals (in baseband and bandpass). He/she will be able to characterize a random process in spectral and statistical terms including the operation of analog modulation equipment. A student will also have acquired the basic skills necessary for the evaluation and verification of the main elements constituting a modern telecommunications network and the Internet.

In particular, the following aspects will be investigated: signal theory, linear and angular analogical modulations and relative performances in the presence of noise; structure and classification of a telecommunications network; the concept of switchboard and the description of the structure of the telephone network; the definition of the main Internet interconnection elements: hubs, switches, routers, gateways, terminals. Ethernet. IP, TCP, UDP and IP addressing scheme.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures supplemented by practical tests in the laboratory.
