CODE 98812 ACADEMIC YEAR 2019/2020 CREDITS 2.5 cfu anno 2 MEDICAL-PHARMACEUTICAL BIOTECHNOLOGY 10598 (LM-9) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR BIO/10 LANGUAGE English TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course of Instrumentation in Genomics and Proteomics aims to provide students with the methodological and instrumental knowledge for the acquisition of theoretical-practical skills which are essential, up today, for basic and applied research in biochemistry and biotechnology. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Instrumentation in genomics Overview of the most used technologies applied to genomic analysis both at the chromosomal and at the DNA sequence level. Instrumentation in proteomics The course aims to provide the basis for the understanding of the mass spectrometry techniques useful for proteins characterization. Chromatographic Techniques The unit provides an overview of the sampling procedures and chromatographic techniques used in proteomics. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Attendance and participation in the planned educational activities (lectures and laboratory experiences) will enable the student to acquire the knowledge necessary for biotechnology research. Specifically, the student will be able to understand, learn and describe the methodologies and instrumentation used in genomics and proteomics. PREREQUISITES Fundamental requirements for the study of the subject are the knowledge of general, inorganic, organic chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology. In particular, the student will have to know in detail the basic techniques in use in the biochemical and molecular biological field TEACHING METHODS The teaching consists of lectures completed by laboratory activities. Activities aimed at applying the knowledge acquired in the classroom during the lectures are foreseen. Lectures in the classroom are delivered through the use of multimedia presentations and the constant use of the blackboard for the writing of molecular structures and the description of instruments and methods. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Instrumental analytical methods; choice of the analytical method and figures of merit; methods and parameters chromatography; liquid chromatography; detectors for liquid chromatography. Mass spectrometry techniques for the structural characterization of molecules of biological interest at different molecular weights. Principles and use of microarrays based systems. Technologies for DNA mutation research. DNA sequencing methods. Screening methods. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY All slides used during the lessons and other teaching material will be available on AulaWeb before the beginning of the lessons together with other bibliographic material in pdf format.
