OVERVIEW

Systematic knowledge of the most important Infectious Diseases.
Ability to integrate anamnestic data, symptoms, objective signs and functional alterations of each Infectious Disease with the diagnostic, instrumental, laboratory and therapy path.
Know the fundamentals inherent in chemoprophylaxis and the therapy of the most important Infectious and Tropical Pathologies.
Reasoning on the infectious disease patient through a differential diagnosis approach with respect to other pathologies.

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Infectious Diseases will be taught from two different but not mutual exclusive perspectives, starting both from the targeted organ (pneumonia, meningitis, bacteraemia, etc.), and from the causative agent/s of the infection.

• The recognition of clinical presentations of infectious diseases and septic syndromes will be dealt with extensively, leading students and young doctors to recognize emergencies in Infectious Diseases (sepsis, meningitis) and to follow a reasoned diagnostic algorithm

• The Integrated Course will include both lectures and presentation of clinical cases

• Particular attention will be paid to the appropriate use of antimicrobials (antimicrobial stewardship) and the risk of development of antimicrobial resistance

• Other important topics include Emerging Infectious Diseases, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV infection

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lessons

Visit to the Infectious Diseases clinic or other consulting departments with specific insights on the infectious disease patient

Seminars (active participation of students is essential)

Group work

The teaching will cover 60 hours of frontal lessons (30 infectious diseases, 30 microbiology) on all arguments included in the program and additional 50 hours (2 CFU) of practical exercises (apprenticeship) in infectious diseases. Practical activities will be carried out at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the University of Genoa. During practical activities the students will discuss clinical cases with Infectious Diseases specialists.

Goals of the training:

To acquire knowledge on microbiologic diagnosis of infections.

To acquire knowledge of appropriate microbiological  procedures, with particular attention to the appropriateness of tests and to result interpretations

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination (according to calendar available on the dedicated website)

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Learning will be assessed only by means of the final oral examination .

All students will be required to obtain a minimun score of 18/30.

To obtain this result, students must demonstrate to have acquired:

-knowledge on clinical presentation, diagnosis and prophylaxis, together with therapeutic approach to the main infectious diseases.

-skills on differential diagnosis and rational use of laboratory tests and imaging resources

-skills on principles of antimicrobial treatment

-skills on the appropriate use of antibiotic treatment and on the impact of the inappropriate antibiotic prescription on the emergence of antibiotic resistance

The final score will be determined by:

-ability to face in a critical manner to all the arguments discussed during the examination

-quality of exposure

-use of an appropriate vocabulary

The maximum score (30/30 lode) will be given in case of excellence.
