The course introduces the student to the knowledge of hygiene necessary for a future profession of biologist in the health field. It deepens the study of epidemiology with particular reference to Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) in healthcare facilities; it analyzes the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that promote the onset of hospital infections, the etiological agents and preventive actions to be implemented.
General epidemiology and application methods. Attributable risk and relative risk. Screening: sensitivity, specificity, predictive value. The new biological indicators (molecular and cellular) for epidemiological research.
The course aims to provide the knowledge of hygiene necessary for a future profession of biologist in the health field. Attendance and active participation in training activities and individual study will allow the student to: - to know the intrinsic and extrinsic factors related to the risk to get a Healthcare Associated infection - acquire tools to describe the epidemiology of care-related infections - know the tools of prevention - be familiar with the structural and plant engineering requirements of the hospital environment and the associated biological risks for patients

The course programme includes the presentation and discussion of the following topics: - distribution and frequency of diseases - studies of punctual prevalence and incidence - standardizing - Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) - Infectious risk for patients - Critical hospital wards - Features and hygienic standards of the hospital environment - control modes of chemical, physical and biological risk of the hospital environment

HYGIENE
Oral presentation in Power Point on a topic of one' choice dealt with during the course and agreed with the Teacher.
The oral exam will check the actual acquisition of basic knowledge on all hygiene issues. It will also assess the ability to link and integrate the knowledge learned during the lessons and to apply it critically.
Regular frequency is strongly recommended
