OVERVIEW

The course takes overall 60 hours, whose the very first devoted to a short review of the main themes of medieval history, and then pursues partially considering students interests taking part actively at the seminar, with strong attention to the structure of the sources for the study of the town and to the development of historiography.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course, developped as a seminar with active taking part by the students, aims both to give basic skills about town in the Middle Ages and their system of relations and to work on sources, instruments and methods oh the research, paying attention to the historiographic developments.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Within the general aims, the purpose is that students learn 1) to recognize richness and complexity of the city phenomena in the Middle Ages, 2) to implement comparisons among different urban and city situations under different points of view, also acknowledging the quality of historiographic contributions, 3) to structure, to present and in case to discuss a report on choosen articles and books. At the end of the course students will be able to undestand and explain the complexity of urban issues during the main chronological phases and thematic contexts.

PREREQUISITES

No specific prerequisites are required.

TEACHING METHODS

Both frontal lessons and seminar, with teaching materials (mostly sources translated from Latin into Italian) provided by the teacher and scheduled interventions by the students.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The course, developped as a seminar, foresees some reports in itinere, in number of at least three (according to the number of attending students). After a collective discussion of some reference texts of the programm at the beginning of the seminar, the attending students – individually or in pairs – report in a structured way of the readings choosen by themselfs in a large variety of proposals made by the teacher; this proposal may vary from an year to another and according to the general courses of studies and may concern also the comparison among more articles. Attending students have to provide written general outlines of their reports, in order to guide other students to a better understanding. The teacher will take into account the active attendance and the questions of each student made during the collective discussions and the reading of sources, the ability to support a contradictory and the development of a proper historiographical language.
