OVERVIEW

The course (which is one of the “affini” subjects in the second year of the Master Degree Program in Sciences of Antiquity, branch of Languages ​​and Classical Literature, and consists of 40 hours of lectures, equivalent to 6 credits) elaborates on the specific critical-literary skills through the extensive and detailed analysis of a topic of particular relevance for the history of Italian literature, with a specific bond with classical and humanistic culture..

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

- To identify in a scientific way the historical, cultural and artistic context in which the texts of Italian literature are produced; - to know the literary tradition of the different genres of Italian literature, in relation to their origin (with particular attention to possible roots in the classical world), their evolution in the literary history, taste and culture in the age of which they are products, up to any developments in later ages; - to acquire a method of critical and scientific interpretation of the texts of Italian literature, learning how to use specific bibliographic tools (dictionaries, literary history, critical editions, essays, articles, reviews, any online media) and the fundamental techniques for text analysis; - to recognize in a personal way the value of a text of Italian literature in the context of the poetry of its author, the history of literature and Italian culture.

 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

- a specific competence in the analysis, interpretation and ecdotic methodologies of the literary text;

- a specific and in-depth expertise in the methodologies of study and research in the field of Italian literature, through the application of the most proven and up-to-date methodologies;

- the ability to define the legacy of classical and humanistic culture in different historical contexts within Italian literature, and to outline the tradition in the following eras and cultures;

- the updated bibliographic knowledge on the historical-critical debate;

- the ability to expose – with an appropriate critical-scientific language, both oral and written – themes, problems, perspectives of texts and literary contexts;

- he formation of a personal artistic taste and of an independent ability to evaluate the literary data, obtained from a punctual comparison with the critical context.

PREREQUISITES

- good basic preparation both the knowledge of the history of the Italian literature from the thirteenth to the twentieth century and the ability to read and interpret the literary texts;

- competence in the analysis, interpretation and ecdotic methodologies of the literary text into its historical context;

- knowledge of the fundamental methodologies of study and research, through the ability to apply the historical-critical method in the exegesis and interpretation of texts;

- ability to define, through the study of Italian literature, the culture of our country and to compare it with that of the European countries and the literary traditions which have had contacts with Italy;

- updated bibliographic information and, in any case, knowledge of the main tools of research and study, including various online resources;

- good capacity for oral and written dissertation, based on an appropriate scientific language.

TEACHING METHODS

Classes will begin on 9 March 2021 according to the timetable published on the Unige website (Tuesdays, 2.00-4.00pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11.00-1.00pm) and will be held remotely on the Microsoft Teams platform, which students can access using the code p8z6u6p. The specific programme will be preceded by a historical-literary introduction; presentation of the main lines of criticism; reading of texts and philological and critical-interpretive analysis. In the final phase of the course, literary criticism essays will be assigned to individual students, who will prepare written reviews.

Di Benedetto, Torino, Fogola, 2004).  The text adopted is an edition of excellent scientific level and represents the point of arrival of a long and problematic exegesis on the etiquette of Giovanni Della Casa, writer and intellectual. A specific critical bibliography will be indicated by the teacher in relation to the various critical-interpretative problems that will arise during the course.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

.The exam will be oral and the final evaluation will take into account the objectives achieved, as well as the work carried out in the reading of the proposed critical passages and of the written reports, discussed in the classroom by the student.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Ongoing checks: possibility of individual or group research related to the topic of the course and aimed at expanding methodological and specialized skills. Written reviews of critical essays, which will then be exposed and discussed in the classroom.

Final exam in oral form on the program carried out and on the specific skills of a master course. The basic skills will be given by a personal capacity for historical and critical interpretation of the texts bound to the cultural and literary context. Excellence will be achieved through a further ability to elaborate on the main articulations of literary criticism and connection to various philological and ecdotic problems, still being solved.
