OVERVIEW

The aim of the course are two: to present the history of typographic book in Europe in modern age; and to describe the development of the publishing in Italy from the XV century until the present age.

AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The first part of course is a knowledge path trought the book though partly as artcraft object, partly as vehicle of knowledge. To begin, we present how the book was been made (from the start of publishing age in XV century to the XIX century; then, we treat the development of publishing in Europe during the modern age. Finally, we focus the attention in how make a layout, what is the paratext, what have been the relationship between printers, authors, publisher and the other people working in a typography.

In te second part of course we'll study the evolution and development of publisher: they stated like moneylender and they have become entrepreneurs. The publishin system - extremely important in occidental cultural life - we'll present strating front the company strategies of big italian group especcialy after the Second World War.

Lectures, Aulaweb, and, if is necessary, lessons in presence by Teams ans Skype.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The aim of course is to provide a strong knowledge about history of book and history of italian publishing. The two framework are very connected if we consider the big cultural world of book.

The course is divide in two parts:

  1. History of book during the modern age. The focus: born of publishing in Europe; the growth and spread of publishing in Italy during the XV and XVI centuries; the most important printers in Europe; book market; relationship between printers and authors.
  2. Hystory of publishing. We'll treat the most relevant aims for the history of publishing in Italy from XIX century until now. The focus: the development of publishing tanks to the technological improvements; the italian publishing during the Savoia Kingdom and the fascist years; the italian contemporary publishing; the XX century book.
