CODE 65323 ACADEMIC YEAR 2020/2021 CREDITS 12 cfu anno 3 TEORIE E TECNICHE DELLA MEDIAZIONE INTERLINGUISTICA 8741 (L-12) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR L-LIN/07 TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The course (12 ECTS) consists of two parts: a module on Theoretical Concepts of Translation Studies applied to the Spanish-Italian language pair (36 hours of teaching) and a translation and interpreting practice module (80 hours). AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course offers theoretical foundations and intensive training to provide students with advanced skills in translation and interpreting between Spanish and Italian. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The Theoretical concepts module will focus on critical and analytical skills by encouraging students to apply the theoretical notions learnt to translation practice from Spanish into Italian. Translation from Spanish into Italian: an introduction to subtitling theory and practice. Translation from Italian into Spanish: a number of text types will be tackled, with an in-depth analysis of translation procedures and contrastive morphosyntactic structures. Dialogue Interpreting module: the module, which is strongly oriented to professional practice, aims at providing intensive training in dialogue interpreting skills for the Italian-Spanish language pair. PREREQUISITES Spanish 2 TEACHING METHODS Lectures; translation and interpreting practice. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Theoretical concepts module: theory and practice of translation from Spanish into Italian. Different text types will be analysed and translated. Students will also be required to write translator's notes and to comment on existing translations. Translation from Spanish into Italian: an introduction to subtitling theory and practice. Translation from Italian into Spanish: translation of various text types. In order to be allowed to take the final test, students will be required to hand in 3 to 5 assignments. Interpreting: business and community interpreting practice. Students will also be required to hand in two assignments (a glossary and a self-assessment exercise) per area. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Hurtado Albir, A. Traducción y traductología. Translation module: translation from Italian into Spanish of an approx. 200-word text in a PC-equipped room. Submission of a subtitling exercise from Spanish into Italian with a short critical commentary on the translation strategies adopted. Interpreting module: a dialogue interpreting simulation on either of the topics dealt with during the course, and a sight translation (both from and into Spanish) on the topic other than that of the simulation. Students will be allowed to browse the glossary created during the course. The exam will also include self-assessment. ASSESSMENT METHODS Theoretical Module: translation adequacy and acceptability will be assessed. The translator's note (in Spanish) will be graded taking into account the ability to apply theoretical contents to the analysis and the critical reflection on the translation strategies adopted. Translation from Italian into Spanish: syntactic, spelling and stylistic accuracy and relevance. Content equivalence in terms of completeness, precision, accuracy and adequacy. In order to be allowed to take the exam, students will be required to hand in 3-5 assignments. For the subtitling module, translation adequacy and acceptability will be assessed, as well as the ability to apply the contents of the readings to analysis and critical reflection on the translation strategies adopted. Interpreting: the following parameters will be assessed: 1) adequacy and correctness in both languages; 2) non-verbal communication skills, 3) functional equivalence and content "user-friendliness". Home assignments will also be part of the grade.
