The course provides the basic knowledge about the behaviour of metallic materials, as well as the influences of the single components of the alloys. The various types of processing by plastic deformation and joining by welding are analysed
Lectures
After introducing the general concepts on the materials’ choice, the equilibrium diagrams are introduced, with particular attention to the Fe-C state diagram, and an analysis of the influence of the main alloying elements of metallic materials.
Next, an examination of how the mechanical characteristics of the material can be modified by performing appropriate heat treatments is carried out. The discussion is completed with the description of the unified tests, through which the mechanical and technological characteristics of the materials are defined.
The following point is the description of the foundry processes and the main plastic deformation operations (rolling, forging, extrusion, die drawing)
The course ends with the description of some different types of arc welding processes and the characteristics and defects of the welded joints.
