OVERVIEW

Advanced urban planning studies the mutations produced in the territory and in the contemporary city in recent years - with the advent of the digital era - and its multiple approach from strategic, socio-cultural and environmental, spatial and interactive parameters ( from the dynamic treatment of information to the flexible orientation of urban phenomena) at all levels and scales of incidence; from the human habitat to the landscape that sustains it and to the social relationships generated.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Through the course the program introduces the student to the analysis of the quadruple value Territory/City/public space/experiential space, specifying from a theoretical point of view the methodologies used and developing the essential skills for a perspective interpretation and conceptualization of the scenarios and contexts under investigation. The main purpose of this theoretical-practical teaching clearly linked to the Urban celebratory event Project and the new public space at different scales, is to provide students with in-depth knowledge on the growing holistic ability to interrelate between different spatial, functional reading levels and environmental, oriented to connect contextual response, urban and environmental reading and multiple social and territorial purpose, in mutual synergy (from analytical recognition to synthetic strategy, from global interpretation to local operation). Exploring plurality, promoting and articulating diversity, raising a multiple interaction - between processes and information, programs and uses, disputes and realities, cities and citizens (designing and formulating new spaces - new scenarios - transversal, architectural, urban, territorial and social , in harmony with a new, more open and adaptable relational logic) and the priority objective of the course.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to foster a transversal thinking, presenting a theoretical-practical approach to the new multiple (multi-level and multi-relational) conditions of the contemporary city and territory based on the ability to work with the communication between city and citizenship, city and society . This approach aims to deepen cross-relations and its relationship today with the emergence of integrated and innovative strategies, in particular in the sectors of new mediation actions of exchange, sharing, celebration and mixture: from urban resilience to new technological capabilities.
Starting from the anticipating perspective as a vectorized and flexible guideline at the same time. The approach to various systemic techniques of analysis, graphic expression, representation and conceptual and communicative formulation (mapping, diagrams, info-graphics, multimedia elements, etc.) will be fundamental for the development of the course, based on an analytical-critical methodology and critical-proactive, through operational approaches to concrete situations, preferably similar and differential - at the same time -, in the local Ligurian area and in the international global area.
The frequency and active participation in the proposed training activities (lectures and laboratory activities) and individual study will allow the student to know in depth the main dynamics present today in our areas of life and relationships and understand their complex conditions, hybrid, mixed and intertwined.
The aim of the course is to encourage interaction with different levels and scales of intervention, spatial, functional and environmental.
These issues will be studied in a critical / proactive way starting from the understanding and interpretation of contemporary urban and architectural space understood as relational systems (and environments): transversal territories of multiple interaction, related to the current multi-scalar conditions of simultaneity , complexity and diversity.

PREREQUISITES

The course is designed as a continuation of an introduction process to the urban project for Design students. The expression and communication of a new type of approach to the challenges of the contemporary city and the design of new convivial / relational scenarios (inter and pro active public and collective spaces) will be on the basis of the tested experimental path.
- Knowing how to critically employ the knowledge, analytical apparatus, operational, design and strategic tools of the designer interested in the city to analyze and interpret places, define their transformation processes, evaluate their transformability conditions and prefigure their future scenarios.
- Being able to respond to the demand for new urban spaces and the new landscape with innovative projects, taking the project as a transversal tool with respect to contemporary urban and territorial scenarios.
- Being able to identify innovative strategies for the design of the public space, understood in its productive and social values and in its relations with the urban conditions of the contemporary world.
- Knowing how to set up and express and communicate morphological-spatial, economic and social simulations of urban transformation, evaluating its effects and potential outcomes.
- Being aware of the socio-cultural challenges associated with the use of new technologies and the emergence of new forms of citizenship, to educate and guide shared and shared design processes.
- Having knowledge of efemere installations and architectures and the temporal transformation of public space

TEACHING METHODS

The course will be divided into ex-cathedra lessons and theoretical seminars with an intensive final workshop. The course is connected to the URBAN PLANNING LABORATORY where the various associated exercises are applied. The lessons will cover issues that are considered essential for the acquisition of critical skills and design skills appropriate to the theme of the laboratory. The exercises are conceived as a path of progressive deepening of the laboratory theme.
The teaching therefore consists of lectures, for a total of 20 hours, and a part of the theoretical-practical laboratory of 60 hours. Attendance at lessons and workshops is mandatory, as per the didactic Regulations. The laboratory will be held by the teaching teachers, assisted by laboratory tutors. At the beginning of each laboratory activity, a brief theoretical-practical introduction is foreseen with the aim of providing the basic principles on which the methodologies used and the balance of the fact up to that moment are based. In the practical part, students, divided into groups of two or three and with the support of teachers and tutors, will have to apply the experimental tools provided and the methods described. At the end of each particular activity, students will have to exchange a critical view with the teacher on the results obtained from the experimental activity itself. The organization and dates of the laboratory activities will be communicated directly by the teachers at the beginning of the working week.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will present a theoretical / practical approach to the spatial and socio-cultural condition of the city, landscape and public space, understood as active multi-scalar scenarios (urban and territorial) connected with possible networked and multilevel systems.
This approach will take into consideration evolution over time, its relationship with new technologies and the development of innovative strategies for a new logic of complexity.
The importance of public space as an active space and as an inter-connective, relational, and social, productive and interactive space (Pro (d) active Space) and its relationship with the new urban condition (Smart city- Intelligent City) and its communicative and co-participated expression (Empathic-City, Convivial-City) will be another of the key themes of the course.
Methodology: analytical, critical and proactive (exercises).
The 2020-2021 course is connected with the European call for Creative Food Cycles and proposes the continuation of the work already produced in the two previous years with the challenge of creating a large set-up, program and presentation of products in a CFc Festivale scheduled for winning announcement.
At the end of the course the student will be able to have essential knowledge about.
- Knowledge of the methods and criteria with which the transformations of the city, territory, environment and landscape are analyzed, controlled and designed.
- The synthesis of the methodologies of analysis, interpretation and design of landscape architecture with the aim of promoting knowledge of different approaches, methods and techniques for the analysis and design of the landscape itself, intended as an eco-system.
- Knowledge of the dynamics of contemporary urban and territorial transformations: practices and regional dimension of living and producing; mobility, accessibility and urban welfare systems; forms of regeneration; sustainability and resilience objectives
- Knowledge of innovative approaches to urban and territorial design and strategies for adapting living environments intended as dynamic, complex and evolving systems.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam involves the production of a compound escritto based on a theme connected with the course, associated with the laboratory project undertaken and analyzed during the course. Eventually construction of audiovisual materials will be necessary. The initiative in creating additional formats will be considered a surplus value. The presentation of the material will coincide with a workshop at the end of the course (on site or outside the city) in which all the texts and projects can be compared together in a single space The exam therefore consists of the delivery of the required materials and an oral presentation presentation of the production, mandatory (which attending students can take during the year) and a short essay integrated in the dossier or summary book.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Details on how to prepare for the exam and on the degree of depth of each topic will be given during the lessons. The mainly oral exam but with a short written essay will verify the effective acquisition of basic knowledge on the tasted methodologies and their applications for the analysis and synthesis of the pre-booked proposals. The narrative, the communicative ability and the problems and open questions will allow to evaluate the ability to apply knowledge in practical situations that can occur with reference to good laboratory practices. The student must be able to connect and integrate the knowledge learned during the laboratory activities with that provided during the lectures.
The oral presentation will mainly focus on the proposal developed in relation to the topics covered during the lectures and will aim to assess not only if the student has reached an adequate level of knowledge, but if he has acquired the ability to critically analyze problems that will be posed in the course of the exam. The ability to describe the processes and proposals clearly and with correct terminology will also be assessed.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The course will evaluate the originality and strategic and conceptual relevance of the post office, the degree of sophistication and development of the drawings and graphic expressions connected with the projects, the communicative and expressive ability and the clear and committed implication with the course, individually and collectively, in synergy with the working group.
Identity of the particular job and coherence of the group research will be values taken into account.
