Heart and kidney disease often coexist in the same patient. Of particular interest are CRS type 1 (acute cardiorenal syndrome) and type 3 (acute renocardiac syndrome). Both subtypes are encountered in high-acuity medical units; in particular, CRS type 1 is commonly seen in the coronary care unit and cardiothoracic intensive care unit. This course will provide a review of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, prevention strategies, and selected kidney management aspects for these two acute CRS subtypes.
Knowledge and understanding of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, prevention strategies, and selected kidney management aspects for the more frequent renal diseases.
This course consists of theoric lectures (10 hours) including discussion of clinical cases.
1. Clinical meaning of urinary abnormalities and of estimated glomerular filtration rate
2.Diagnostic usefulness of: Abdominal Rx scan, Renal US and Doppler, Intravenous pyelogram, Retrograde pyelography, Angio TC, renal scintigraphy, renal magnetic resonance imaging
3. Clinical presentation of acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, Cardiorenal Syndromes, other renal syndromes
4. Fluids and electrolyte disorders during acute and chronic renal failure
5. Contrast induced nephropathy: pathophysiology, risk factors, prevention strategies, and management.
6. Pathophysiology, prevention strategies, and selected management aspects for the more frequent Cardiorenal syndrome
7. Strategies for Renal Replacement Treatment including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
8. Renal Transplantations: hints

Written examination (10 multiple choice tests in 10 minutes)
The assessment takes place only through the final exam which aims to ensure the effective acquisition by the student of the expected learning outcomes.
The student to pass the exam, then return a mark of not less than 18/30, must demonstrate:
Knowledge and understanding of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, prevention strategies, and selected kidney management aspects for the more frequent renal diseases. Paying a particular attention to the Acute Cardiorenal syndromes and to the contrast induced nephropathy.
