The course aims to provide conceptual and methodological tools to better understand and explain political and social events in comtemporary regimes (institutions and political regimes) in order to apply scientifc theories to the empirical world.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The first part of the course explains: 1) origin and development of political science; 2) analytical tools; 3) political participation; 4) groups and movements; 5) electoral systems; 6) party and party systems; 7) parlaments and political representation; 8) governments; 9) public policies; 10) democratic and non democratic regimes; 11) bureaucracy; 12) public opinion; 13) multilevel governance; 14) quality of democracy.

In the second one some characteristics of contemporary democracies, the Italian political system (1991-2017), processes of democratization, party politics and neopopulism in comparative perspective will be provided.
