This subject deals with analysis, modelling and synthesis of nonlinear dynamical systems, with emphasis on models of oscillators (e.g., circuits and neurons). Topics include numerical tools for simulation and analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems (in MATLAB environment), bifurcations and transitions between different dynamics, multistability, chaos. On request of at least one student, the lectures and teaching activities will be given in English, otherwise in Italian.
It is expected that at the end of this subject the student will be able to analyze (analytically and/or numerically) a nonlinear dynamical system, even if dependent on parameters. Moreover, he/she should be able to synthesize some classes of nonlinear dynamical systems.

Moreover, he/she should be able to synthesize some classes of nonlinear dynamical systems. To this end, during the lectures the student will have to learn and apply analytical and numerical (MATLAB) tools for simulation, analysis and synthesis of nonlinear dynamical systems.
Basic concepts of mathematics, physics, signal processing, automatic controls, electronics.
Combination of traditional lectures (about 30 hours) and classroom MATLAB sessions (about 20 hours).
1) analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems (about 70%)
2) approximate synthesis of systems for nonlinear signal processing (about 30%).
The teaching topics are applied to examples arising from different contexts, e.g.: 1) nonlinear oscillators (mainly electronic and biological); 2) neuron networks, control systems, circuits and algorithms for image processing.
Some lectures are concerned with MATLAB computer simulation exercises, aimed to apply and reinforce the main teaching topics.
For the students of the Bioengineering programme (6 CFU), part 2 is replaced by seminars related to models of neurons and neuron networks.

Regular (see the calendar at the website https://www.politecnica.unige.it/index.php/didattica-e-studenti/orario-e-calendario-delle-lezioni)
Oral examination and possible (upon student demand) nonlinear dynamical system analysis, using the analytical and numerical tools introduced during the lectures.
The learning results are assessed through both the interaction during the lectures and the oral exam.
