OVERVIEW

Aim of the course is to deepen the studying of the most significant global challenges of this era and, among them, in particular, the one concerning migration issues through a multilevel legal perspective, which considers the legal framework of EU law and the solution adopted for its adaptation in the Italian legal order as well as in some of the European States.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is aimed at providing the students with the necessary knowledge to understand the EU legal instruments to face the global challenges. In this light, the course will therefore start with the analysis of the EU system of competences and of its exercise with specific reference to the external dimension. Specific attention will be therefore devoted to few of the most important global challenges, such as: - Human rights and democracy - Access to justice - Migration - Climate change - Economic crisis An adequate knowledge of the fundamental elements of European Union law (i.e. institutions, legislative procedures, sources of law, fundamental freedom) is a necessary starting point.

TEACHING METHODS

Traditional frontal lectures will be supported by the use of PPTs.

Students will be involved in the discussion of case-studies and specific topics.

Students attending at least 75% of classes will be examined with i) discussion of the topics; ii) written test, and iii) students PPT presentations. Competences can also be verified during oral exams.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course, held in English, deepens the study of how the European Union legal order tackle some of the existing global challenges (such the protection of the environment, the financial and economic crisis, the use of internet and the protection of personal data, the competition at global level and the migration issues).

Every Monday from 9.00 to 12.00 a.m., Department of Political Sciences (Albergo dei Poveri, Torre Ovest, third  floor at the level of the Library. For a better organization of the meetings, students are kindly invited to write in advance an email to the following address: laura.carpaneto@unige.it

During the COVID-19 emergency, meetings will take place on the online platform Teams (channel code: 3h0wr34). The Teams channel could be used also for lessons and/or exams in case of weather alert.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is oral, and held in English. Students are usually asked three questions on topics of the programme.

Students attending at least 75% of classes can alternatively be examined with i) discussion of the topics; ii) written test, and iii) students PPT presentations. 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Both written and oral examination will verify that students have acquired theoretical and practical knowledge on

  • Understand the role of the European Union as a global actor
  • Understand the reach of European Union law in the global context
  • Understand the external competences and powers of the European Union with regard to issues having a global reach
  • Express themselves by virtue of technical legal terms
