The course, divided in two parts, consists in an in-depth study of topics concerning public and private international relations.
In the first part, the course addresses the topic of private and procedural international law. In the second part, the course addresses the main rules governing diplomatic and consular relations and functions as codified in international instruments and developed in the practice.
In the first part, the course will give students knowldege in free movement of judgments and in international jurisdiction, knowledge in applicable law to cross-border cases. In the second part, the course aims at the acquisition of specific competences in the field of diplomatic and consular law, through the study of the rules existing at the international and regional level. In this context, students will acquire the necessary knowledge in order to comprehend and operate with the main rules governing diplomatic and consular relations and functions as codified in international instruments and developed in the practice.

Frontal classes with text and case law material analysis (uploaded on aulaweb). Seminars might take place during classes with the teacher with experts of the subject matter.
In the first part: (i) PIL terminology; (ii) Scope of application of the Italian PIL act; (iii) EU intervention in PIL after the Amsterdam Treaty in 1997; (iv) Scope of Italian jurisdiction in light of domestic, EU and international law; (v) Coordination ofn EU law and domestic law.
In the second part: i) origins of diplomatic and consular law; ii) establishment of diplomatic and consular relations; iii) diplomatic and consular functions; iv) diplomatic ceremonials; v) diplomatic and consular immunities and privileges; vi) EU external action service.

The exam is oral, and held in Italian. It usually consists of 3 questions on topics of the programme. To give the exam, the student must enroll to the exam session via the internet portal.
To students taking part to 2/3 of classes, it is given the possibility to give written tests at the end of each part, which consist of multiple-choice questions.
The exam will verify the acquisition of competences, legal reasoning and thinking, as well as the acquisition of proper legal terminology.
