OVERVIEW

The course teaches  the fundamental notions concerning statistical 
methods for social sciences, and in particular the collection of information 
and descriptive and inferential analyzes.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course teaches the student the fundamental notions concerning statistical methods for social sciences, and in particular the collection of information and descriptive and inferential analyzes with particular attention to the analysis of globalization processes and socio-economic inequalities.

PREREQUISITES

There are no pre-requisites for teaching attendance.

TEACHING METHODS

Unless otherwise information due to the evolution of the health situation, the course will take place in the traditional way

Part 1 - The basic tools

1. Introduction to the history of statistical thought
2. Official, national and international statistical sources
• Data and statistical sources
• The detection and representation of statistical phenomena
• The central measures
• The dispersion measures
• The measure of the association of characters: the correlation
• Regression
• The concept of probability: classical, frequentist, conditional probability
• The subjectivist probability
• Notes on the main statistical sampling methods.

Normal distribution law and electoral polls
 
Part 2 - Socio-economic inequalities: an international perspective
a. economic growth, globalization processes and inequalities
b. poverty and deprivation: definitions of measures. International comparisons
c. Measuring economic inequality: the Gini index
d. Measuring social inequality: the construction of composite indicators
e. International indicators: the Mazziotta Pareto Index
f. beyond GDP: well-being and sustainable growth.
