AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Informing the student of the characteristics, prospects and norms of the course program, in order to be able to organise their activities. Giving the student beginning the studies basic knowledge elements to build their awareness about the problems they will face as a doctor. Build an open attitude towards the skills they will learn during their studies.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

To start the training path of the future doctor with full exposure to all the intercultural and interdisciplinary dimension of the profession, through a survey of the evolution of medical thought and of the challenging great ethical issues of today’s world.

To identify medicine as space and perspective for human care, in a comprehensive view embracing the complexity of humans as subjects / objects of care, the interplay of health and disease, the wealth of care practices.

To promote awareness of the relevance of Medical Humanities in the development of the medical training curriculum.

The course includes numerous, supposedly separate topics in order to represent the richness and variety of medicine, with a view to highlight its manifold anthropological, cultural and ethical issues at play.

 

 

TEACHING METHODS

The course includes lectures, seminars, video projections and small group classroom activities.

If the current health emergency precludes live lessons, the sessions will be carried out using the Office365-Teams platform in synchronous or asynchronous mode

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Classroom work will include seminars involving contributions of scholars with a varied cultural background, in the fields of biology and human sciences. In particular, topics will touch on the epistemology of medicine, history of medical thought, anthropology of health, and ethics of care, organized in the following sessions:
THE CONCEPT OF HEALTH, DISEASE AND CARE OVER TIME
MIND AND BODY: A SINGLE ENTITY
CARE OF THE HUMAN PERSON
RETHINKING MEDICINE
LIFE END 
THE EVOLUTION OF MEDICINE
 CARE APPROACHES
In addition, practical information will be provided on the organization of the medical curriculum and on student’s access to the main utilities available online from the UNIGE site.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

A written test at the end of the course will be available in the first semester of the first year (30/30 point evaluation) to be weighed with the subsequent evaluations of the Human Sciences (80789) course of the second year.

 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

History of Medicine is complemented by a written test (30/30 point evaluation) mediated on a weighed scale with the results of the remaining parts of Human Sciences (80789) of the second year
