CODE 65347 ACADEMIC YEAR 2021/2022 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 1 SCIENZE STORICHE 9917 (LM-84) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR M-STO/08 TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB OVERVIEW The teaching of specialised archival studies will entail illustrating the creation, development and management of archives according to their different kinds of origins, both public and private. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The teaching of specialised archival studies will entail analysing the creation, the development and the management of archives according to the different kinds of origins of the archives themselves, both public and private. The students will be taught both the theory and the practice of using historical sources in general, with particular attention being paid to those available in the Historic Archives of the City of Genoa, such as those regarding the old magistrates of the city in modern times, the municipal administration in the 19th and 20th centuries, the archives of aristocratic families and those of various personalities and of the trades unions in the contemporary period. TEACHING METHODS The lessons will include an exposition of the theory of the specific subject in question, followed by a critical analysis of selected original documents, so as to reveal and comprehend the way the institutions work and how the documents are produced. After a short period of open discussion the topic of the lesson will be summarised. Guided tours of the archives of the Magistrato di Misericordia and the Library of the Museo dell’Attore are planned. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Part one. Using critical analysis techniques to study the documents kept in the Historical Archive of the City of Genoa, an examination will be made, both singly and interactively, of the old Magistrates of modern times (the Padri del Comune, the Censori, the Magistrates dell’Abbondanza, those controlling the Providers of Wine, of Oil, the Office and the Hospice for the Poor, the Command of Voltri), with possible reference to the collection of manuscripts. The birth and development of the city’s municipality will be illustrated through a study of the documents produced during the period of domination under the French Empire, during the administration of the Kingdom of Sardinia and the post-Italian unity period, up until 1910. Especial attention will be paid to the documents produced by the City during the 20th century, in various forms both before and after the institution of “Great Genoa”. Part two. In the second part family archives from the 16th to the 19th centuries will be studied. Especial attention will be devoted to those of the Brignole Sale and the De Ferrari Galliera families. The archives of various personalities will be studied through a critical analysis of the archives of some local artists (Villanis, Mangini, Ravera Oneto), of the Mayor Gelasio Adamoli, of Nunzio Apostolico Lunardi and of Gaetano Perillo, the founder of the Ligurian Centre for Social History, and also of the Archive of the Chamber of Commerce and of the CGIL Trades Union of Genoa.
