OVERVIEW

Intense sport training produces physiological modifications that may aggravare preexisting pathologies.Trainers should be able to recognize any sign of traumatic injuries  or endocrine, metabolic and respiratory dysfunctions.Furthermore they should be aware of beneficial of sport-linked pharmacological therapies and the toxicity of their abuse.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course of sport-integrated medical sciences is aimed to prepare athletic trainers and motor rehabilitation personnel. To this purpose, teaching of endocrinonogy, sport medicine, respiratory tract diseases and pharmacology offer a comprehensive view on how physical activity should be adjusted on individual physiopathologic caracteristics focusing also on individual predisposition to develop sport-related pathologies. Students will also be teached on the importance to recognize properly pharmacologic therapies that, although required to follow training or rehab path, could induce disease by themselves, if misused.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course of Sport-Integrated Medical Sciences aims to teach atletic trainers and physical rehabilitation personnel  to qualitatively and quantitatively adjust training demand (muscolar, osteo-articular, aerobic and metabolic), according with athletes or patients status of health. To this purpose, students will be prepared to learn physiology of endocrine system, the most frequent phenomena of its alteration and how they negatively reflect on metabolism and endurance. They will learn to recognize symptoms, causes and consequences of traumatic injuries that sportsmen could face to, the diseases affecting the respiratory tract and therapeutic properties, side effects and abuse consequences of sport-related pharmacological therapies. Learning outcomes for each teaching that compose the course will be further detailed into the specific sections.

PREREQUISITES

The teaching of  sport medical sciences is focused ot those pathological conditions that can affects the scheletric, respiratory and endocrine sysyems consequently of traumatic, autoimmune or infectious events; moreover it will examine the most common pharmacological treatment for the pahological conditions that often are associated with sport experience. The comprehension of these topics requires that students have a comprehensive knowledge of the biochemical mechanisms that sustain plastic and energetic omeostasis of human body. An appropriate knowledge of  the basis of organ physiology is also helpful to better comprehend the topics of the cours of sport medical sciences.

Section of pharmacology

Pharmacology is a very complex subject, whose study needs adequate knowledge in chemistry, cytology,  histology, anatomy and physiology. In particular, the comprehension of cellular, tissue and organic mechanisms that rule pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of any drugs takes advantage on the knowledge of anatomical and physiological features of the biological systems they interact with and modify.

Among such knowledge, particular importance concerns:

  • Cell structure and the functions of cytoplasmic organelles
  • Tissue structure and physiology.
  • Physiology of organs

Moreover, it is relevant for students to possess the knowledge of those mechanisms that cause most common pathogenic processes that occur in sport practice, and represent targets for therapies.

TEACHING METHODS

Theaching of all sections is to be followed as frontal lessons.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Section of endocrinology: Endocrine system physiopathology and its interaction with sportive and rehabillitative activity. Section of sport medicine: Sport-related traumatology, emergency and BLS procedures, methabolic pathologies and sport. Section of respiratory tract diseases: Spirometric parameters, restrictive and obstructive conditions of respiratory tract, asthma, exercize-induced asthma, BPCO. Section of pharmacology: Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic, therapy of inflammation and pain, therapy of respiratory tract diseases, drug abuse in sport doping.

More detailed programs are reported in the specific sections.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Given the Covid19 emergency, exams will be performed as online interviews using Microsoft teams platform. Students will find the date of exams on unige website. Few days before exame dates, an announce explaining the modality to access microsoft teams will be provided on aulaweb. As soon as Covid19 emergency will cease, the exams will resume written plus interview modality.  The exam will be composed of a written test followed by a brief interview; the test is a single-answer quiz with 15 questions for each teaching). Each right answer is prized with a score of 2, wrong answers score 0. The integrated score is the avarage of the scores in each teaching. Please note that to pass the exam, students must overcome the score of 18/30 for each teaching. The purpose of the interview is to discuss with students the results of their test and give them the chance to improve their written score.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Interviews will be conducted to assess the acquisition by the students of the capacity to define the main features of pathologies that affects caddiovascular, respiratory and endocrine system and kwow indications and side effects of the  drugs used to control the course of these diseases and the related symptomatology. As for written tests, each teaching may insert growing difficulty among the 15 questions. Most of them want to evaluate student's capability to integrate different aspects of sport-related pathologies, such as causes, interaction with physical activity and pharmacologic therapy.
