Nowadays, membrane technology can be found in all industrial areas. This course will provide an insight into membrane based separations to attain different objectives: concentration, purification, fractionation, reaction mediation. Students will acquire in-depth knowledge in in the area of membrane properties and preparation, module assemblage, separation mechanisms, transport phenomena. The focus will be on various applications of membrane technology with special attention to engineering problems and solutions, feasibility and economics. AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The aim of this course is to help the students to attain a basic competence in using membrane technology principles for separation in chemical processes. Students are expected to demonstrate the following industry oriented learning outcomes: Describe the function of a given membrane Identify the ideal membrane for a given task Classify and explain preparation methods from a given material Master the principal membrane characterization techniques Apply various transport models to assess the membrane flux and the extent of separation Select a membrane process to carry out a specific separation Compare a given membrane technology with other separation methods Apply membrane technology in process industries. PREREQUISITES Basics of transport phenomena and thermodynamics TEACHING METHODS Lectures SYLLABUS/CONTENT Introduction to membranes and membrane processes Membrane processes and process intensification Transport in nonporous and porous membranes Membrane materials and material properties Preparation of synthetic membranes Characterisation of membranes Membrane processes with focus on pressure driven processes RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Marcel Mulder: "Basic Principles of Membrane Technology", Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1996 TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD CAMILLA COSTA Ricevimento: Contact hours: free, by appointment only (email: camilla.costa@unige.it) ALBERTO SERVIDA Ricevimento: Always by appointment by e-mail (servida@unige.it) Exam Board CAMILLA COSTA (President) ALBERTO SERVIDA (President Substitute) ANTONIO COMITE (Substitute) LESSONS LESSONS START Students are recommended to frequently visit the following web sites for an update https://corsi.unige.it/9020/p/studenti-orario https://chimica.unige.it/node/390 Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION Oral examination (one-hour discussion on the course contents in order to assess the achievement of the learning outcomes). ASSESSMENT METHODS The purpose of the oral examination is to assess whether the student has acquired the main concepts associated with the topics addressed during the course, and if he is able to apply them critically. In case of emergency and only according to specific indications by the University of Genoa, the assessment method for the exam might be changed, including the possibility of an online procedure.
