The course in brief Presentation Sustainable polyMer And pRocess chemisTry (SMART) is designed for students who aspire to master the new sustainability challenges of polymer science and chemical processes, with a focus on upcycling, reuse and end-of-life management of plastic and inorganic materials, all intertwined with the principles of eco-design and the circular economy. The programme combines professional skills with a solid foundation of fundamental science addressing technical and management issues and with an interdisciplinary approach to the synthesis and properties of polymers, chemical engineering, catalysis, and chemical process design, also aiming at innovative approaches for waste management in renewed raw materials for a cleaner environment. At SMART, you will collaborate with industrial partners, immerse yourself in seminars on technical and intellectual property and take the opportunity to be an active participant through flipped classrooms, engaging seminars and cutting-edge master thesis projects. Admission: Bachelor's degree or higher with a major in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Chemistry and related subjects with a cumulative average above 75. An interview may be required to establish eligibility for admission. Campus: GenoaCoordinator: Prof Davide Comoretto (coordinatore_CCS_Chim_Ind@unige.it) Learning by doing The degree programme includes subjects such as: Industrial Chemistry, Catalysis, Polymer Science and Technology, Plants and Reactor Technology, accompanied by important laboratory activities. In addition, during the dissertation the student independently carries out fundamental and applied research activities, both in the department's laboratories and in collaboration with or at important industrial facilities in Italy or abroad. Professional outlets The highly interdisciplinary skills acquired make the Industrial Chemist a flexible professional figure who can have access to various company functions: Research & Development (materials and/or processes) Production and Operation Inline Quality Control Energy Manager Chemical Data Scientist Health, Safety and Environment According to a 2019 AlmaLaurea survey, 100% of Genoa graduates are employed one year after graduating. What you will learn INNOVATIVE POLYMERIC MATERIALS Development of polymers and composites for specific advanced needs SUSTAINABLE PROCESS DEVELOPMENT From an idea in the lab to an industrial-scale process PROCESS ANALYSIS AND OPTIMISATION Analysis of the quality of a process and its products ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND CONTROL Technologies and materials for environmental quality control LABORATORY ACTIVITIES Experiencing/practising the fundamental concepts acquired PLANT VISITS AND INDUSTRIAL SEMINARS Direct experience of Industrial Chemistry in the manufacturing world Did you know that... Industrial Chemistry was born from the pioneering and multidisciplinary work of Giulio Natta. Alma Laurea shows that 100 per cent of our students are working with satisfaction one year after graduation. You will learn to work in the POLYMERS-PROCESSES-ENVIRONMENT fields with an interdisciplinary approach. You can do your thesis either at the DCCI or at external organisations/companies in Italy or abroad. Contents From its earliest days, Industrial Chemistry has dealt with polymers and chemical processes evolving to meet the challenges of sustainability and efficiency that Modern Society imposes on the Chemical Industry. The Industrial Chemist: The Industrial Chemist Designs, characterises and develops high-tech macromolecules over their entire life cycle while minimising their environmental impact. Finds sustainable solutions to recover and recycle plastics in view of the circular economy. Innovates chemical processes by developing cost- and energy-efficient solutions Solves environmental degradation problems by proposing environmentally friendly and industrially sustainable solutions Develops process/product control systems Industrial Chemistry in Genoa, thanks to the deep-rooted tradition combined with the liveliness of the new generation of teachers, focuses on the interdisciplinary education of students with a solid chemical and technological cultural profile thanks to the teachings related to the traditional processes of Industrial Chemistry, Catalysis, Polymer Science and Technology - including the most advanced applications - and Plants. Laboratory activities then allow the student to put the fundamental concepts into practice. The cutting-edge basic and industrial research carried out by our researchers makes it possible, especially during the dissertation, to complete and strengthen the students' training by carrying out an original research project independently. Coordinator Welcome to the Master's Degree Course in Sustainable polyMer And pRocess chemisTry (SMART). The course that you will undertake involves an in-depth study of the different areas of basic chemistry and related technologies combined with the study of polymeric materials and their properties, chemical processes and catalysis with a view to environmental sustainability and the circular economy. You will have the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge acquired - in particular during your degree thesis - in laboratory activities using advanced instrumentation and addressing issues of relevant scientific and industrial interest.
