The seminar will focus on the relationship between technological innovation and the social context in which it is designed, developed and disseminated, with particular reference to IA and medical biotechnologies. Algorithms and vaccine platforms are not neutral: their "black box" embodies instructions that reflect the interests, values and goals of a part or the whole of society. The sociology of innovation aims to open these and other black boxes in order to understand and anticipate the social impact of technologies and, at the same time, the impact of society on tech
The seminar aims to strengthen the students' critical view of technological and social innovation processes
- Analysing the historical and social process that gave birth to Artificial Intelligence
- Observe from several sides (economic, environmental, cultural) the impact of certain technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence;
- To overcome a deterministic and/or solutionist approach to the analysis of social and technological innovation
None, but preferable to have taken an introductory course in general sociology and/or political science
In presence
The seminar consists of 3 sessions.
- Introduction to the theoretical models of science and technology studies (STS) and in particular to the SCOT (Social Construction of Technology) approach and Actor Network Theory
- Application of a theoretical model to the analysis of the generative processes behind the Covid-19 protein vaccines;
- Application of a theoretical model to the development and dissemination of Neural Networks and other technologies of the AI paradigm
The Professor will provide articles and other documents during the class
