The lectures are aimed to provide basic knowledge on navigation support systems and telecommunications technologies employed on board Yachts: from systems based on electromagnetic waves and their propagation to networking fundamentals. In particular, the course will deal with technologies related to radio systems and their antennas, radar systems, safety systems employing electromagnetic waves, global positioning systems, satellite communications and on-board networking systems, usually exploited by modern Yachts.
The course will deal with electronic systems that are used and integrated into the yacht's Navigation System
Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities (lectures and exercises) and the individual study will allow students to:
- Acquire a correct terminology for the identification of the main components and functionalities of a telecommunications systems on board the yachts;
- Know the structure and functions of the communications and networking systems used in yachts as well as their wireless components;
- Know the main mechanisms that guarantee reliable communications via radio and satellite systems and mechanisms related to navigation support such as the radar;
- Know the basic operations of electromagnetic systems used to guarantee onboard safety and handle possible emergency situations;
- Identify the main components and functions that allow the transfer of information from / to yachts;
- Provide examples of applications of wireless technologies to support applications related to yacht navigation.
Even if not mandatory, useful prerequisites are the basic elements of mathematics, circuit theory and computer science.
Frontal lessons.
Fundamentals of electromagnetic fields. Electromagnetic waves: propagation and radiation. Antennas and their parameters. Structures for guided propagation. Atmospheric propagation. Radar systems and other electromagnetic systems for navigational support (radio, DSC, GNSS, EPIRB, SART, AIS, Navtex).
Elements on NMEA networking standard and mobile applications for Yachts. Fundamentals of communications systems and networking. Yacht radio, satellite and wired communications systems for voice and data: GSM, 3G, 4G, WiFi, Inmarsat, xDSL. Navigation systems: GPS.

The exam is written, and consists in 30 multiple choice questions about the topics described in the course.
The written exam is based on a multiple choice test, which will verify the effective acquisition of basic knowledge on the technologies presented during lectures. The problems and questions will allow evaluating the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in practical and applicative situations.
The assignment of the exam grade will take into account: 1) knowledge and understanding of the covered topics; 2) ability to answer questions about the covered topics; 3) ability to solve problems related to the covered topics.
The Teachers are available for any additional information about the course.
