The course of General Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy takes place at the second year of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology Master Degree and provides 10 CFU.
General Pharmacology studies drugs, their qualitative and quantitative interactions with the living organism, and the mechanisms of action underlying their therapeutic effects, clinical uses and adverse effects. General Pharmacology is structured into two major branches: pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
Pharmacognosy studies natural compounds with a biological activity and their active components, as well as their molecular and pharmacological effects, their use in therapy or their role in the development of drugs.
Learning outcomes of General Pharmacology will be a basic knowledge about: i) drug pharmacokinetic: absorption and distribution of drug in the body; drug metabolism; excretion); ii) general pharmacodynamics: targets and mechanisms of drug action; dose-response curve; agonists and antagonists; biochemical and physiological drug effects and their molecular mechanisms; iii) individual variations and side-effects
Learning outcomes of Pharmacognosy will be to provide knowledge of the natural compounds with pharmacological activity, of their active components and of their molecular effects and use in therapy.
Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department ( Prof. Luca Raiteri, Luca.Raiteri@unige.it ) before class begins, in order to liaise and arrange the specific learning methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes. VERY IMPORTANT: any request for compensatory tools and adaptations in the exam MUST be done within 10 working days before the date of the exam according to the instructions that can be found at https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa/comunicazioni

The examination method for assessing the achievement of the objectives by the students will take the form of an oral examination and will be conducted by a committee. The examination will last approximately 30 minutes for each learning module.
The committee will verify the achievement of the objectives by asking questions about the program carried out during the lectures.
