The course aims to provide the fundamental principles of soil mechanics necessary for the analysis of the most common geotechnical works and systems in the field of civil engineering, including shallow and deep foundations, rigid and flexible retaining structures, and slope stability.
The objective of the course is to provide students with the practical tools necessary to tackle geotechnical engineering problems consistent with the professional profile of a master's graduate. The course aims to impart the knowledge and methods for analysing the behaviour of major geotechnical systems (shallow and deep foundations, rigid and flexible retaining structures, slope stability) that are preparatory to their design and verification.
The course is structured into lectures, exercises, and case study discussions. Laboratory visits will also be organised.
Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with Professor Federico Scarpa (federico.scarpa@unige.it ), the Polytechnic School's disability liaison.

The exam will consist of a single oral test, during which the solution of an analytical exercise may also be required. The final oral test is unique, comprehensive, and can be taken on the dates scheduled in the exam calendar.
The oral test consists of questions on the course syllabus and a discussion on the resolution of the analytical exercise.
