Key themes include globalization in its evolution and the dynamics of development in some of the world's major countries. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to analyse the international economic relations system from the end of XIXth century to the present time. The goal is to examine the economic process and its multiple variables in order to understand the changing context in which the firms live and work. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Knowledge and Understanding: Students must acquire adequate knowledge and effective comprehension of the major international events and the economic and institutional relationships related to them. Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding: Students should be able to apply the knowledge they have acquired to understand and solve business-related (and also political, economic, and social) problems, considering specific historical conditions in light of the different development models presented. Autonomy of Judgment: Students should be able to use the knowledge they have acquired both conceptually and operationally, with an independent capacity for evaluation and with skills in various applied contexts. Communication Skills: Students must acquire the technical language typical of the discipline to communicate clearly and without ambiguity with both specialists and non-specialists. Learning Ability: Students must develop adequate learning abilities that allow them to independently continue exploring the main topics of the discipline, particularly in the professional contexts in which they will work. PREREQUISITES There are no specific prerequisites, other than fundamental knowledge of the economic system and how it works, which is typically acquired in a three-year undergraduate program. TEACHING METHODS Lectures, case analysis, group work, guest speakers. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The global economy from 1945 to 2020: Dynamics and Issues. In a historical and diachronic perspective, the following macro-themes will be addressed: Economy and Global History: The major economic areas and development paths of the main countries – commercial – A comparative framework of economic powers at the start of the 21st century. Economic Policies: The economic policies adopted in different countries and at different historical moments are analyzed, considering their theoretical assumptions and the goals they aim to achieve. Special attention is given to the role of states and institutions in their relationship with economic dynamics. Comparative Economic Models: The American model. Anglo-Saxon capitalism – The Rhineland and Japanese models – China’s “socialist market economy” – The Asian Tigers: the Korean model. Market economy vs. planned economy. The analysis of capitalist models will consider both political and institutional aspects as well as the social and cultural dimensions. Society and Labor: Demography. Migration flows. Income distribution and inequalities. The labor market. Business and Enterprises: Large and small businesses. Multinationals and transnationals. Public and private companies. Fordism and Toyotism. The assessment of the student’s preparation is based primarily on general questions that allow evaluation of the student’s ability to frame topics, use of disciplinary terminology, fluency in applying specific knowledge, and ability to explain the proposed topic while making appropriate interdisciplinary connections, without deviating from the subject matter of the exam syllabus. If deemed necessary, targeted questions will be asked to assess the student’s knowledge on specific content areas of the discipline. The oral exam will be a structured dialogue in which the student’s ability to respond to requests for clarification or comments on specific aspects of their presentation is evaluated.
