AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Starting from the general presentation of some of the main approaches and concepts used by sociology to understand the characteristics of society and its functions, the course will make it possible to identify the social dimension of sport, considering it as specific social phenomena, constantly in relationship with other elements. Specific attention will be devoted to the relationship between health and physical activity. This relationship, from the point of view of the sociology of health, also recalls essential questions in motor sciences: individual well-being/wellness, body care, prevention of pathologies typical of postmodernity. At the end of the course the student will have to: - know the fundamental concepts of sociology applied to motor sciences and the concept of health; - be able to identify the social dimension of sports and physical activity-related phenomena and, in particular, to analyze the relationship between physical activity/body/health; - knowing how to evaluate the impact and social relevance of motor practices; - knowing how to use the skills acquired to have a properly social vision of sporting phenomena and related to physical activity.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Starting from the presentation of some of the main theoretical approaches and concepts used by sociology to understand the features of society and its institutions, the teaching will allow the students to identify the social dimension of sport, paying specific attention to symbolic-value, normative and communicative aspects.

At the end of the teaching, students will be able:

  • to know the basic concepts of sociology applied to the study of physical activity and the concept of health;
  • to identify the social dimension of sport and physical activity, both in general and in regard to the sphere of cultural and communicative processes, socialization and the development of identity, deviant practices;
  • to evaluate the impact and social relevance of sport and physical activity in contemporary society.

TEACHING METHODS

Frontal teaching, classes in attendance.

In addition to the theoretical part of the teaching, the teacher will be supported by athletes, trainers, or managers presenting their experience and relevant case-studies.

To integrate textbooks, the teacher will upload teaching materials on Aulaweb, sending also links to videos related to the topics discussed.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The first part of the teaching consists of a general introduction to sociology, describing the processes at the origin of Western modern society. After an exposition of the main theoretical approaches of discipline, a definition will be offered of sport and physical activity in contemporary society.

A second part will be dedicated to an exposition of some basic sociological concepts, useful for the analysis of society:

– Values, norms, and institutions.

– Identity and socialization.

– Deviance and criminality.

A third part will investigate these concepts with regard to sport and physical activity:

– Sport and modernity. Values, identities, and contentions.

– Sport and community. Socialization, communication, and deviance.
