OVERVIEW

This ESP (English for Specific Purpose) course is designed to equip learners with the language and communication competences needed for their studies, and later for their work. 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to develop the abilities acquired in the English language and translation course. which involved comprehension of specific language through analysis of specialised articles of a psychological nature. However there will now be added emphasis on the student’s own production in English, both oral and written as well as analysis and comprehension of specialised publications and texts.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Understand specialised articles and texts.
  • Understand the main ideas and some detailed information in extended speech about familiar topics in the area of study.
  • Report and explain the information acquired and express personal ideas and opinions.
  • Explain terms and expressions pertaining to the area of study.

 

PREREQUISITES

The level needed for the course is B2, the exit level from upper secondary school as required by the MIUR national guidelines . 

TEACHING METHODS

Interactive seminars, reading of texts, Videos

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Specific texts and articles in English related to the field of study will be examined.
Additionally, speeches will be listened to, and videos on related topics watched.
Where necessary, linguistic and phonetic insights will be provided.
The texts and links used will be indicated from time to time.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The following texts can be useful:

- Pesce C, Medical English, Zanichelli, 2020, for specific language;

- any self-study B2 course, for consolidation of the required entry level.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral interview.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

During the exam, candidates will be required to read a passage from a text covered during the course and talk about it.
Candidates will also be asked to listen to a short excerpt, report its main idea and possibly express an opinion.
The interview will take place entirely in English.
You must register for the exam through the student portal.

Information for Students with Disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Please note that to request exam accommodations, you must follow these steps:

1. Upload your certification on the University website at servizionline.unige.it in the “Studenti” section.
The documentation will be reviewed by the Inclusion Services Office for Students with Disabilities and SLD (https://rubrica.unige.it/strutture/struttura/100111).

2. At least 10 days before the exam date, send an email to the exam instructor (Prof. Giulia Cappagli), putting in cc also the Inclusion Coordinator (Prof. Laura Traverso, laura.traverso@unige.it) and the Inclusion Services Office (disabili@unige.it, dsa@unige.it, or inclusione.studenti@info.unige.it). The email must include:

  • The name of the course
  • The exam date
  • Your full name and student ID number
  • The compensatory tools and dispensatory measures you are requesting

Prof. Traverso will confirm to the instructor that you are entitled to request accommodations. The instructor will then reply, confirming whether the requested accommodations can be granted.

⚠️ Important: Late requests may not allow sufficient time to implement necessary changes (e.g., concept maps must be concise and suitable for the exam). If not submitted on time, adjustments may not be possible.
