To introduce the basics of microbiology, the characteristics of the main microorganisms of clinical interest and the relationships between microorganisms and the host. Provide a general knowledge of the main microbiological diagnostic investigations including the execution and evaluation of the antimicrobial susceptibility tests. To acquire the ability to discriminate the main antimicrobial-resistance mechanisms starting from an antibiogram.
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- know the basics of microbiology;
- classify the main infectious agents;
- understand how bacteria and viruses cause infectious processes;
- collect a biological sample to be sent to the microbiology laboratory according to the guidelines;
- evaluate an antibiogram;
- to be able to deduce the serious condition of a patient even from the reading of a microbiological report and from the interpretation of the antimicrobial susceptibility tests
The microbiology course is organized in lectures. These topics are illustrated by the teacher through Powerpoint presentations that shared on Aulaweb. Teachers always recommend the use of a reference textbook to broaden the overall view of the subject.
Anatomy and physiology of bacterial and viral cells; characteristics of pathogenicity and virulence typical for both cell models. Normal bacterial population and the concept of opportunistic pathogen. Brief notes on endogenous and exogenous infections. Brief notes on the etiological diagnosis of infectious diseases and the assessment of bacterial resistances. Brief notes on the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance.

First semester, from October 2019
The timetable for this course is available here: EasyAcademy
The exam consists of an oral test. The interview focuses on the program carried out during the lectures.
Through the discussion of some topics concerning the program carried out, the teacher verifies the achievement of the educational objectives of the teaching. The ability to show, summarize and assimilate the contents of the program will also be evaluated
