AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide undergraduate students with a foundational understanding of the physiology of the cardiovascular system, with particular focus on the mechanisms that regulate its function and its integration with other body systems.

By the end of the course, students should be able to understand, critically evaluate, and thoroughly describe the basic principles of cardiovascular physiology and the mechanisms governing its activity.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures with Slide Presentations

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Blood, Hemostasis, and Hemodynamics. The electrical activity of the heart: excitability and automaticity. Generation and conduction of the action potential in the heart. Electrocardiogram (ECG). The cardiac cycle: cardiac mechanics and regulation of cardiac contractility. Arterial system, capillaries, venous system. Pulse wave and arterial blood pressure and its measurement. Microcirculation and capillary exchange. Venous return and lymphatic circulation. Mechanisms regulating cardiac activity and arterial pressure. Regional circulations.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is oral and includes one question on the cardiovascular system, related to the topics covered in class and listed in the syllabus.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The student’s knowledge of cardiovascular physiology will be specifically assessed based on their response to the question posed by the instructor.

The candidate must demonstrate adequate understanding of the physiology of the cardiovascular system.
