SEMESTER 1° Semester

OVERVIEW

The importance that mathematics has assumed in the study of social sciences and especially in relation to economics requires that the student acquire familiarity with a series of mathematical concepts.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching consolidates basic mathematical knowledge and provides the essential mathematical tools that will enable students to approach economic and statistical subjects with full awareness and competence. Through a theoretical and practical approach, participants will become familiar with the fundamental mathematical concepts indispensable for analyzing and solving complex problems in the field of social sciences.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquired skills: logical and technical skills necessary for the study of theoretical models in the economic field.

PREREQUISITES

Basic arithmetic.

TEACHING METHODS

18 hours of lectures with exercises are planned.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Arithmetic: multiple operations, fractions, negative numbers, powers.

Algebra: algebraic expressions for economic concepts involving unknowns, simplifying and reformulating basic algebraic expressions, single linear equations with a single unknown variable, the summation sign, basic mathematical operations on algebraic expressions involving inequality signs.

Functions and inverse functions, graphs corresponding to linear nonlinear functions, slope of linear functions and tangents to nonlinear functions by graphical analysis, using the slope of a linear demand function to calculate point elasticity.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Teaching material available on the "aula web" platform of the teaching.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The learning assessment of the entire course will be done through a final exam that includes a written test containing exercises similar to those done in class.

The detailed procedure of the proposed exercises will be required, complete with reasons for each answer. The number of exercises and the relative score may change based on the difficulty. The evaluation consists of suitable/not suitable. The test covers the three parts covered in class: Arithmetic, Algebra and Functions. To pass the test, it is necessary to pass all three parts. For example: Arithmetic: suitable 8 exercises out of 10 Algebra: suitable 3 exercises out of 5 Functions: suitable 2 exercises out of 3

The test will last approximately 90 minutes.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam aims to verify the student's actual knowledge and acquisition of basic theoretical notions as well as his ability to use mathematical tools for the study of economics.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Registration on the Aula web dell'inseganemento platform is strongly recommended. This site was designed as a place for interaction between students and teachers (there is both a forum and a chat) and as a repository of teaching material from which students can freely draw. All relevant information for the course will be indicated there and exam results will also be published.

Students who have regularly filed a certification of DSA, disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact both the contact person Prof. Aristide Canepa(aristide.canepa@unige.it) and the teacher at the beginning of the course, to agree on teaching and exam methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory tools.
