AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of this course is to provide students with the necessary tools to understand the main phenomena that induce - in different geographical areas - human mobility and, in particular, the role that global climate change plays in this regard. In the regions most exposed to extreme climatic events, a redistribution of human mobility can be observed, resulting not only in new migratory routes, but also in new economic arrangements that significantly affect the practice of certain tertiary activities. In the face of these challenges, impact management is the only possible way to mitigate the consequences of global climate change.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand the natural and anthropogenic causes of climate change;

  • identify the main parameters used to measure climate change;

  • identify the main manifestations of climate change at both local and global scales and their interconnections with other phenomena;

  • analyze and explain the relationships between human settlement, mobility, and climate change;

  • assess how tertiary activities (particularly tourism) may be affected by climate change and human mobility;

  • in light of future scenarios related to climate change, propose strategies to manage the associated issues, with particular attention to human mobility.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of lectures aimed at presenting and examining the main implications of the relationship between climate change and mobility.

Occasionally, scholars or experts in the field (both Italian and international) may be invited to hold seminars in order to explore specific aspects of the issues discussed.

Attending students will also have the opportunity to engage in innovative teaching methods, as they:

  • may give classroom presentations on specific topics agreed upon with the instructors at least one week in advance;

  • may carry out group work on specific case studies agreed upon with the instructors. The group work consists of two phases: the drafting of a written report and an oral presentation supported by slides. Detailed information will be provided during the lessons and via the course’s AulaWeb page.

Participation in group work (if positively evaluated by the instructor) allows students to obtain the following Open Badge: Personal Competence – Advanced Level.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The program is divided into two parts:

FIRST PART – Causes and manifestations of climate change at local and global scales; main parameters and tools for assessing the extent of changes and their impacts on the territory; policies and tools for climate change mitigation.

SECOND PART – Classification and description of the main phenomena related to human mobility; socio-economic impacts resulting from human mobility induced by climate change, with particular reference to the changes imposed on (migratory and touristic) flows.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

EXAM MODALITIES FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS

  • Who have completed and presented the group project and presented individually the text agreed upon with the instructors: the exam is considered passed without the need for any further assessment.

  • Who have completed and presented the group project: the exam consists of at least three questions covering the entire program, based on the materials presented in class by the instructors and on at least three of the scientific articles uploaded to AulaWeb at the beginning of the course.

  • Who have not presented the text agreed upon with the instructors: the exam consists of at least three questions covering the entire program, based on the materials presented in class by the instructors and on one of the two textbooks indicated during the course by the instructors.

EXAM MODALITIES FOR NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS

The oral exam covers all parts of the program and requires the study of the textbook(s) and all materials uploaded to AulaWeb, as specified in the section TEXTS/BIBLIOGRAPHY (NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS). It will consist of at least three questions.

Please note that attending at least 50% of the lessons allows students to take the exam following the attending student program.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral presentation will be used to assess:

  • the mastery and depth of knowledge acquired;

  • the ability to apply the skills developed.

The evaluation criteria include:

  • the quality of the presentation;

  • the correct use of appropriate terminology;

  • accurate knowledge of the topics covered.

Students who complete group projects will also be assessed on the quality of the written report, in terms of both content and formal aspects.
