CODE 111577 ACADEMIC YEAR 2025/2026 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 3 FARMACIA 11673 (LM-13.) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR MED/05 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 2° Semester OVERVIEW The teaching of physiopathology and clinical pathology aims to provide, through the knowledge of physiopathology, the basic tools for the interpretation of some classes of laboratory markers of disease. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The teaching has two main objectives: - students' learning of the fundamentals of the physiopathology of the main organs, that is, the main disease processes and the mechanisms by which these processes alter the physiological function of the organs - providing fundamental knowledge and making students acquire adequate medical-scientific terminology to correctly and competently evaluate and interpret the results of the main laboratory diagnostic tests that investigate the function of these organs, both in physiological and pathological conditions This knowledge is now fundamental for graduates in Pharmacy, who also play the role of healthcare personnel in the scientific-disciplinary area of clinical analyses AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The teaching of Clinical Pathology will be integrated with that of Pathophysiology to provide students with intermediate to advanced degree knowledge of the main fields of laboratory diagnostics. Pathophysiology of the various organs will be integrated with the main related laboratory tests so as to provide students and future graduates with the necessary tools to correctly and competently evaluate and interpret the results of the main laboratory investigations, both under physiological and pathological conditions. The student should become able to know the main diagnostic tests and their applications, their significance and limitations, and also to choose which tests are the most indicated in different human pathologies. PREREQUISITES Basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, immunology, and general pathology are prerequisites TEACHING METHODS Teaching will be delivered primarily through frontal lectures, during which the lecturer will seek to interactively engage students. Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the lecturer and the School/Department's disability liaison at the beginning of the course to agree on possible teaching modalities that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning patterns. In the event of a health emergency or weather alert, lectures will be held in online teaching mode or otherwise according to University guidelines. SYLLABUS/CONTENT General clinical pathology and differences between analysis laboratories and POC Renal function and its evaluation Liver pathophysiology and its evaluation Thyroid function and its evaluation Pathophysiology and clinical pathology of diabetes Lipoprotein metabolism and cardiovascular risk Urine test Blood and blood count Plasma proteins and electrophoretic pattern Inflammation markers Tumor markers: meaning and some examples (PSA, bHCG) Hemostasis and its evaluation in the laboratory Deficiencies of some vitamins (B12, folate, D) RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY The lecturers will provide web-based lecture handouts at the end of the course. Class schedule The timetable for this course is available here: Portale EasyAcademy EXAMS EXAM DESCRIPTION The final exam consists of an oral test on the topics covered in class through which the teacher will verify whether the student has achieved the educational objectives. During the exam, the rules regarding the evaluation method of students certified as DSA or with other educational needs indicated by the university will be respected. (e.g.: additional time in the case of written exams, use of concept maps to be viewed for approval by the teachers at least one week before the exam date) The fundamental objectives must be achieved in order to pass the exam. In the event of a health emergency, the exams will be held in online teaching mode or in any case according to the University directives. ASSESSMENT METHODS The verification of learning takes place through the final exam which aims to ascertain the effective acquisition by the student of the expected knowledge and skills. Contributing to the final grade expressed in thirtieths are: - the ability to deal cross-culturally and critically with the required topics; - the correctness, clarity, synthesis and fluency of exposition; - mastery of the subject matter; - the adoption of appropriate terminology.
