CODE 118328 ACADEMIC YEAR 2025/2026 CREDITS 3 cfu anno 1 ADVANCED MATERIALS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 11967 (LM SC.MAT.) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR FIS/03 LANGUAGE English TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester OVERVIEW This course will review the basic concepts of classical and quantum physics to allow the students to engage with the study of the Principles of Solid State Physics AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The student will review the basic concepts of general physics and statistical physics as well as those of quantum and condensed matter physics, balancing the initial knowledge due to the different background of the students. Starting with practical and foundational examples the introductory principles of solid state physics will be derived. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The students will master the basic concepts of quantum mechanics necessary to engage in a solid State course. PREREQUISITES Concepts of generla physics and elementary mathematical analysis. TEACHING METHODS frontal and remote lectures SYLLABUS/CONTENT Conservation laws in classical physics, Waves: differential equation, wavelength and wavevector, superposition principle and interference. Fourier series and Fourier Transform. Fundamentals of quantum mechanics: the photoelectric effect, black body radiation, discrete spectra of atoms. Material waves and De Broglie relationship. Time independent Schroedinger equation and the statistical interpretation of the wave function. The indetermiantion principle. Energy levels in an infinite and in a finite potential well. The harmonic oscillator. Zero point motion. The wave equation for a free particle. The atomic orbitals of the hydrogen atom. Identical partilces and Bose - Einstein e di Fermi Dirac statistics.
