AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students with the conceptual and operational tools needed to conduct building analysis and diagnosis. Upon completion of the lessons, students will be able to identify and describe the construction elements, materials, and state of conservation of architectural structures, as well as formulate hypotheses regarding the processes and causes of the observed deterioration.

TEACHING METHODS

The course includes lectures, demonstrations of the use of simple analysis and diagnostic tools (optical microscope, hygrometer, salt detection tests, etc.), and the application of what has been learned in the analysis and diagnosis of the building chosen as a case study. Field trips are also planned to illustrate the topics covered live.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course offers a general methodological overview of the topics covered, in-depth lessons on individual materials and construction elements with particular reference to the Ligurian context, and example lessons on real-life cases that illustrate the interactions between analysis and diagnosis in different situations (buildings constructed with traditional or contemporary techniques, simple and complex buildings, buildings affected by various degradation problems).
