Imperia Headquarters

follow the instructions to find out how and when to take the Initial Preparation Test

For the Computer Engineering replica based in Imperia, you will have to take an Initial Preparation Test (A.T.H.E.N.A., Aptitude Test for Higher Education in Numeracy and Analysis) to assess your knowledge of mathematics and computer science.

In addition, if you do not present a B2 or higher language certificate, you will also have to take the English language section level B2.
The certifications accepted at the University are listed on the dedicated CLAT page. Certifications verified as compliant will allow you to be recognised at B2 level.

This test is not selective nor does it foresee any closed number and will be available in several sessions during the first semester.

You can only take the test once.

If you do not achieve the pass mark in the initial preparation test or in the English language section, you will be given Additional Educational Obligations (OFAs) which you can fulfil within the first semester of the first year of the course.
The OFAs are considered fulfilled by acquiring the required CFUs by passing the examination of one of the following subjects (examination and lectures are in English): GENERAL PHYSICS 1, LINEAR ALGEBRA AND GEOMETRY, MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS MOD

1. If you do not complete the OFAs by the deadline for the submission of the second year study plan, you will have to enrol as a repeat student.
For disabled students and students with Specific Learning Disorders (S.D.A.), specific verification methods will be provided for, following request and the certifications indicated in the University regulations.

For information and to enrol in A.T.H.E.NA. you can consult the dedicated page which will be created in August

Exemption from Verification

The following are exempt from Verification:

  • Students who have obtained a score of 90/100 or higher (or equivalent score, in the case of a grade not in hundredths) in the final state examination of the second cycle of higher education in Italy (maturità). The exemption is not applicable for foreign diplomas.
  • Students already in possession of a degree in Italy or abroad.
  • Students enrolled in the academic year 2025/2026 (and not "dropouts") who transfer from a "related" course of study at the University of Genoa and who are not burdened by O.F.A. The courses considered "related" are published in the section Courses of study
  • Students who make a transfer from another University or a readmission and who have a sufficient number of CFUs, which will also be assessed in relation to the priority courses of the particular course of study. In doubtful cases, the CCS will decide.
  • Students of the Penitentiary University Pole (PUP)
.

How it works

The test lasts a total of 90 minutes and consists of 50 multiple choice questions in English divided as follows:

Computer Science 20 questions
The questions will focus on general knowledge and computer science.

Logic and Mathematics 20 questions
Assessment of the ability to logically complete an argument, in a manner consistent with the premises, which are stated in symbolic or verbal form through multiple-choice questions.
For the mathematical part, the questions are aimed at ascertaining the mastery of:

  • numerical sets and arithmetic calculus (natural, relative, rational, real numbers; sorting and comparing numbers; order of magnitude; operations, powers, radicals, logarithms), algebraic calculus;
  • Euclidean geometry (polygons, circumference and circle, measurements of lengths, surfaces and volumes, isometry, similarities and equivalences, geometric places).
  • elements of plane trigonometry (sine function, cosine, tangent and their inverses, fundamental relations of goniometry, formulas of associated angles, theorems of the right triangle).

English Language 10 questions - mandatory only for those who do not have a B2 or higher level of language certification accepted by the University.

This section of the test is aimed at assessing comprehension of the English language.
