OVERVIEW

The course is aimed at providing the basic concepts and tools of linear algebra and analytic geometry. It is a first semester course of the first year which introduces concepts that will be used in many subsequent courses.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching unit aims to provide students with the basic notions of linear algebra and analytic geometry, with particular reference to sets, complex numbers and polynomials, linear systems, matrices, vector spaces, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide basic concepts of linear algebra and analytic geometry, developing a "scientific" approach to study and an ability to use the tools provided to solve problems.
The student is expected to reach the ability to understand the text of an exercise / problem, set solutions through appropriate tools (chosen from those provided in the course), solve exercises / problems in a "non-mechanical", reasoned, autonomous way and express results and conclusions clearly and precisely.

PREREQUISITES

Basic mathematical knowledge acquired in school, including trigonometry.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures will be devoted to developing the theoretic part of the course, as well as to solving problems aimed to a better understanding of the theory. There will be additional hours (tutorato) devoted to discussion of exercises suggested by the lecturer.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Sets. Complex numbers and polynpmials. Analytic geometry in 2 and 3 - dimensional space. Linear systems, matrices, gaussian elimination, rank and determinants. Vector spaces, homomorphisms and diagonalization. Spectral Theorem. Quadratic forms.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of a written test (exercises to be solved) and an oral test. Further details are specified on Aulaweb.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam verifies that the student has acquired the required skills, and knows how to use and express them in correct terms. In particular, it will assess the ability to solve exercises relating to the main topics covered in the course, with adequate explanations on the procedure and a clearly expressed conclusion; it also verifies the ability to explain with the correct mathematical formulation the theoretical concepts and arguments covered in the course.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students who have valid certification of physical or learning disabilities on file with the University and who wish to discuss possible accommodations or other circumstances regarding lectures, coursework and exams, should speak both with the instructor and with the School's disability liaison.
