OVERVIEW

Didactique du FLE : approches et méthodologies – This course forms part of the teaching programme, adopting a workshop-based approach focused on classroom practice in the teaching of French as a foreign language

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learning objectives of the course are:

- To be able to distinguish between and critically analyse the various approaches to teaching French as a foreign language

- To be able to analyse the various textbooks used for teaching French as a foreign language

- To be familiar with and able to apply the descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - To be able to plan a teaching sequence for learning French as a foreign language

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the module, participants will:

- have a firm grasp of the key theoretical concepts of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (action-oriented approach, competences, knowledge, linguistic skills, strategies, activities, etc.);

- will be able to critically analyse textbooks and teaching resources for French as a Foreign Language (FLE);

- will be able to design and deliver teaching units, distinguishing between general and linguistic competences, objectives, knowledge and activities;

- will be able to design teaching programmes and assess outcomes in relation to the competences to be developed and the expected levels of linguistic proficiency.

PREREQUISITES

French C1 level.

TEACHING METHODS

Classroom workshops, individual and group work.

Students who have submitted documentation of a disability, specific learning disability (SLD), or other special educational needs are advised to contact both the coordinator, Prof. Sara Dickinson (sara.dickinson@unige.it), and the course instructor at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination arrangements that, while adhering to the course objectives, take into account individual learning styles and provide appropriate accommodations.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The following topics will be covered:

1. The action-oriented approach: theory and examples.

2. Concepts of competence, knowledge, skills and levels.

3. Distinction between strategies, objectives, activities and exercises.

4. From theory to practice: designing the teaching unit, focusing on objectives and stages.

5. From theory to practice: developing the teaching unit, focusing on materials, competences and activities.

6. From theory to practice: evaluating the teaching unit, focusing on assessments.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The final assessment consists of an oral examination, following the submission of a teaching unit plan, to be drawn up using a template that will be provided to participants during the course.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The comprehensiveness and methodological soundness of the teaching unit’s design will enable the assessment of whether the intended learning objectives have been achieved; oral proficiency in French will also be assessed during the interview.
