This course -- reserved for students of English -- for the master's degree is taught in the second semester through nine two-hour seminars.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to develop practical and critical skills in the translation of literary and/or non-fiction texts from English into Italian. Students will learn to identify and address the stylistic, cultural, and linguistic challenges of translation. The course also intends to strengthen students' stylistic sensitivity and theoretical awareness within the field of translation. 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the seminars, students who have attended regularly and participated actively will be able to:

• understand at an advanced level some fundamental (meta)critical and methodological tools of literary translation from English into Italian;

• analyze the English literary text from a translational perspective with considerable independence.

PREREQUISITES

Advanced knowledge of the English language (C1 level) and of the Italian language (C1 level).

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching activity consists of a series of seminar/workshop sessions. Its objective is to increase in master's degree students the awareness of the methodological problems involved in approaching the translation of literary and non-fiction texts from English into Italian.

Attendance is mandatory for this course, and must amount to at least seven out of nine seminars. In the case of an Erasmus stay in the second semester, this course cannot be chosen.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Individual and group activities are planned involving the translation of literary or non-fiction texts from English into Italian, as well as seminar discussions on specific translation issues or on comparisons between published translations of the same text.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

The texts (narrative, dramatic, poetic, non-fiction) will be provided during the seminars.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The workshop, for which attendance is mandatory, provides a pass/fail assessment.

Students will be evaluated based on their participation in the seminar and workshop activities.

Notwithstanding the mandatory attendance requirement of at least seven seminars, should the qualitative level of participation in the seminar discussions be deemed insufficient, students will be required to pass a written test consisting of a translation from English into Italian.

• attendance monitoring;

• text translation;

• seminar discussions in which the instructor acts as a facilitator;

• any other activities agreed upon with the students.
