OVERVIEW

This professional development course will provide an overview of technical knowledge and soft skills that are useful/necessary to pursue a career in the bioengineering field. The course is organized as a seminar series by experts from national and international companies, who will also introduce the various professional roles that biomedical engineers can have in companies/hospitals.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide an overview of the technical knowledge and transversal skills essential for pursuing a professional career in the field of bioengineering. It is structured as a series of seminars delivered by experts from national and international companies, offering students direct exposure to the professional world. Through these sessions, students will have the opportunity to explore the various roles that biomedical engineers can undertake in the industrial sector, including research and development, regulatory affairs, quality control, project management, intellectual property rights and clinical trials. The course is designed to support students in identifying potential career paths and in developing the skills required for a well-informed and qualified entry into the job market.

This professional development course covers interdisciplinary skills related to professional and scientific practice, in industrial, research or clinical environments.

  • Understanding of EU medical device regulations frameworks and the lifecycle of a medical device
  • Knowledge of the IPR regulations and IPR management and protection strategies
  • Design and management of experimentations involving human subjects
  • Knowledge of techniques and tools for project management and the management of large software projects
  • Understanding the career opportunities of biomedical engineering.

  • The lifecycle of a medical device and the EU medical device regulations (MDR)
  • Management of intellectual property rights (IPR)
  • Ethics aspects and code of conduct in professional and scientific practice in the biomedical field
  • Project management (management/planning of activities, times, costs, suppliers ..)
  • Management of large software projects
  • Management of the quality system
  • Opportunities and roles of a biomedical engineer in industrial, clinical and research environments
  • Soft skills

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Active participation in classes: the student must attend all classes in person as single/group exercises can be done during the lectures. Additionally, it is possible to request a project on the topics covered in the lectures to discuss with the instructor.
