SEMESTER 1° Semester

OVERVIEW

The Production Systems course provides the tools to manage efficient production systems including concepts of sustainability and energy efficiency. This course aims at analysing and providing methodological and practical tools for process optimisation and sustainable use of resources. Theory and case studies are integrated to improve the performance of industrial production systems.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Under the title 'Production Systems' one can place very many different problems. This course is related with the decomposition of a planning and control problem of a production systems in different subproblems. For any of the subproblems after a analysis process, a set of solving technques will be considered. Such solving techniques have to be integrated in possible solution of the 'main' production problem.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand and critically analyse issues related to the sustainability of production systems: from the responsible sourcing of raw materials, to the use of energy from renewable sources, to the optimisation of processes from a sustainable perspective. Particular attention will be paid to the assessment of environmental costs and the efficient control of production activities, with the aim of reducing energy and environmental impact by improving overall system performance.

In general, the student will acquire advanced personal skills

PREREQUISITES

Basic skills of Mathematics and Operations Research

TEACHING METHODS

Front lessons with theory and exercises

Students who hold valid certificates relating to Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the lecturer and the school’s disability liaison officer at the start of the course to agree on any teaching arrangements which, whilst respecting the course objectives, take into account individual learning styles.

The contact details for the university’s disability liaison officer are available at the following link: https://unige.it/commissioni/comitatoperlinclusionedeglistudenticondisabilita.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course will follow the following structure:

- Introduction to decision-making levels, classification of production problems and classical and sustainability-related KPIs (emissions, energy consumption and prices, integration into the energy system)

- Multi-objective optimisation (Pareto front, weighted sum, normalisation, e-constraint, goal programming)

- Overview of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, biogas) and storage systems in production plants

- Control and scheduling of production systems with integrated energy supply

- Energy-aware scheduling even with limited resources

- Heuristic methods for solving proposed problems

- Exercises and case study projects related to the course topics

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination. Students with learning disorders ("disturbi specifici di apprendimento", DSA) will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

At the end of the course students must be able to analyze, decompose and eventually solve (at least indicating the necessary techniques) production planning issues

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) may request accommodations for exams at least 7 days prior to the exam date by filling out the “accommodation request form” (available via online services at https://modulionline.unige.it/richiesta-adattamenti# no-back), which will be automatically forwarded by the system to the instructor in charge of the course and to the faculty liaison for students with disabilities and SLDs in their School/Department.

The student will receive a copy of their request.
