AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides students with operational tools for the design and operation of service systems of industrial processes, in accordance with the Community rules in force. Particular emphasis is placed on safety concepts for evolving systems group 1 fluids (dangerous fluids) and group 2 (fluids under pressure) and related risk analysis

TEACHING METHODS

Theoretical lectures with exercises.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Basic Components. References to the main components found in process and service systems: piping, pumps, surface and direct contact heat exchangers. Shut-off, safety, and control valves. Components are discussed based on actual data found in catalogs and technical manuals.

Water Service. Supply: water mains, wells, reservoirs, waterways. Storage: level, underground, and elevated tanks, pressure vessels (pressure tanks). Sizing the hydraulic network and choosing a pump from the catalog. Sizing the usable volume for storage tanks.

Compressed Air and Technical Gas Service. Compression stations; types and uses of technical gases. Storage in and withdrawal from cylinders. European Community Legislation 97/23/EC – PED and related system implications.

Steam Service: Sizing saturated and superheated steam distribution networks, pressure reduction units, desuperheaters. Drainage and condensate collection networks. Structural sizing of the network and expansion joint system.

Liquid fuel service: chemical and physical characteristics. Storage tanks. Pumping and heat tracing systems. Burner feed rings (atmospheric and pressurized), regulation and safety devices. Burners (mechanical atomization, pneumatic, centrifugal, with steam injection; on/off control, dual flame, flame modulation). Sizing of fuel transfer and burner feed systems.
