These skills will allow students to develop critical skills in the main conceptual categories of geography.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities and individual study will enable the student to acquire adequate knowledge regarding the main tools of human geography. These skills will allow the student to develop critical skills in this regard of the main conceptual categories of geography.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching consists of frontal lectures for a total of 36 hours with the use of slides and eventually of videos, with analysis and discussion of case studies. Moments of debate on specific topics will also be planned during the course.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course introduces the main approaches of Human Geography and provides the theoretical and methodological tools necessary to understand and critically interpret contemporary geographical phenomena. Particular attention will be devoted to representations of space and to the evolution of geographical thought, from the earliest forms of cartography to more recent critical and participatory perspectives.

Through the development of an appropriate geographical vocabulary, students will explore key concepts of the discipline, including space, place, territory, landscape, region, environment, development, and gender, examining their social, cultural, political, and symbolic dimensions.

The course will also address the relationship between geography, power, and conflict; the role of maps in the production and communication of geographical knowledge; and major issues related to socio-spatial inequalities, environmental justice, climate change, and the Anthropocene.

Special attention will be given to geographies of difference and vulnerability, with a focus on gender issues, childhood and youth, environmental and social risks, and their educational implications. Through the analysis of case studies and the use of geographical research methods, including the follow-the-things approach, students will be guided in understanding the interconnections between local and global processes and in developing a critical perspective on the complexity of contemporary territories.
