Indeed, it constitutes a central topic around which a multitude of perspectives, not only geographical, are developed. The workshop intends to operate within the social dimension by presenting actual and concrete aspects of marginality such as gender, ethnic-racial, or aspects related to access to resources, distribution of services or participation in social life. Therefore, the workshop, with appropriate methodologies and targeted interventions referring to case studies, will stimulate students to develop interpretative and design skills and to work on certain aspects of marginality. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Learning Objectives At the end of the laboratory, students will be able to: Understand the concept of marginality in its complexity and multidimensional nature, recognizing its main social, territorial, cultural, and educational dimensions. Critically analyze forms of marginality related to gender, ethnic and cultural belonging, inequalities in access to resources and services, and different forms of exclusion from social participation. Use interpretative tools from social geography to examine the relationships between territory, inequalities, and processes of inclusion/exclusion. Recognize the role of territorial contexts in both producing and addressing conditions of marginality, identifying risk factors and community resources. Apply analytical methodologies and case-study approaches to understand the educational and social needs of individuals and groups experiencing marginality. Develop socio-territorial planning and design skills aimed at promoting inclusion, equity, and active participation. Strengthen reflective, collaborative, and operational competences relevant to future professional practice in educational, social, and territorial contexts. Expected Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the laboratory, students will be able to interpret situations of marginality from a geographical and social perspective, critically analyze case studies, identify needs and resources within territories, and design educational and socio-pedagogical interventions aimed at fostering inclusion and social participation. TEACHING METHODS The laboratory is characterized by an active and participatory approach aimed at fostering students’ direct involvement in the analysis and interpretation of phenomena of marginality. Teaching activities will combine theoretical introductions with practical exercises and collaborative work. In particular, the following methodologies will be employed: interactive lectures and guided discussions on the main topics and concepts addressed in the laboratory; analysis of case studies and significant experiences related to different forms of marginality; individual and group work focused on the exploration of specific territorial and social issues; use and discussion of documentary materials, data, maps, statistical sources, and multimedia resources; laboratory activities aimed at the critical interpretation of territorial contexts and the design of educational and socio-territorial interventions; presentation and discussion of the outcomes of the activities carried out, including moments of collective reflection and participatory evaluation. The laboratory approach will emphasize experiential learning, peer collaboration, and the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical applications, promoting the development of analytical, planning, and professional skills relevant to educational and social contexts. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The laboratory addresses the theme of marginality from a socio-geographical perspective, focusing on the relationships between territory, inequalities, and processes of inclusion/exclusion. Marginality is examined as a complex and multidimensional phenomenon that manifests itself in different social and territorial contexts and involves cultural, economic, relational, and educational dimensions. More specifically, the laboratory will explore: the main theoretical approaches to marginality and social exclusion; the contribution of social geography to the analysis of territorial inequalities; different forms of marginality; inequalities in access to resources, services, and educational opportunities; social participation and processes of inclusion within territorial contexts; the analysis of case studies and intervention experiences involving groups and communities experiencing conditions of marginality; the design of socio-territorial actions aimed at promoting inclusion, equity, and active citizenship. Laboratory activities will include participatory methodologies, the analysis of documents and research materials, guided discussions of concrete case studies, and project-based exercises. Through these activities, students will be encouraged to develop analytical, interpretative, and planning skills applicable to the study of marginality in diverse social and territorial contexts. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Teaching and learning materials, including scientific articles, research papers, and reports, will be provided throughout the laboratory and uploaded to AulaWeb.
